Shrinkin’ Stinkin’ Thinkin’ by Mary Ann Brittingham

Occasionally I read a book that really zeroes in on raising self esteem. Or tackles the hard issues dealing with children who are different. So from time to time I will post a review.

As far as I know this book can not be bought in stores but can be ordered online at http://www.reflectionsseminars.com. I’m slightly prejudice about this book because I know the author. I had the pleasure of getting to know this fantastic teacher when she taught in upstate New York. MaryAnn has always searched for creative ways to encourage self-esteem. What I like about this book is that she is gentle on parents. She tells them up front that parenting is an ongoing learning experience. She has great expertise in working with children who are a little different and when something isn’t working; she encourages you to go back to the drawing board till you find a way to reach the child.

In Shrinkin’ Stinkin’ Thinkin’, she talks about how to turn around negative thinking and behavior. Sometimes we do and say things without thinking about how it sounds from a child’s viewpoint. Or we over negotiate with a child and wonder why everything is an argument.

Most of her techniques are things that are easily incorporated into daily dealings. She understands that one approach doesn’t work for all children especially strong willed children. It’s an easy read and one that you can put down and pick up at will without losing the theme of the book.

She also does powerful seminars for teachers/parents and if your school’s educational seminar program is looking for a dynamite speaker, I would urge you to look her up!
